Going on an adventure!

I will soon be working at Cartoon Network Studios for a series known as Adventure Time by Pendleton Ward. And so I wanted to share my excitement for this wonderful show and opportunity by creating my own tribute Illustration below.

The show won't premiere until 2010, but get acquainted with Finn and Jake and what to expect by looking at the official Adventure Time Blog by Frederator, and by watching the original pilot below. Enjoy!

"You'd better look out below!"

From a "wild" weekend, I was inspired and did my own tribute to Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild things Are." I had a lot of fun with this one, especially working with a pastel palette and experimenting with different forms of shading. Hope you like! Roar!

Gears of Gore

I originally intended to release this for the 8-bit & Beyond show, but did not have enough time to finish it. I'm usually not for all the violent shoot 'em up games we have nowadays, but this game is an exception. Like Bio-shock, it has a great story, some great characters, and some amazing and creative gore.

P.S. I know the Locust's blood is not red, just using some creative license.

Round 1 - Ryu (リュウ)

I've always had a soft spot for Street Fighter. Forget Primal Rage, Killer Instinct or Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter was the fighting game for me! I even loved the terrible 1994 film version when it came out. Ryu has always been one of my favorites. Can you guess the next two? Hadōken!!!

Childhood Heroes! - Dragonball!

Those unfamiliar with this character, his name is Majin Buu and he belongs to the wonderful world of Dragonball Z, created by Akira Toriyama.

I've always liked this version of Goku, all powered, beaten up, but still ready to fight to the end! KA-ME-HA-ME-HAaaAAaaA!!!

Golden Age Face Series,

My small submissions for the Autumn Society's Golden Age Show. The show will feature heroes from the golden age of comics and animation, illustrated by the society's members. I've always been a huge Popeye fan since my grandfather was also a sailor. So growing up I always compared and admired both. Goofy was and still is my favorite Disney character, and Felix is just classic and one of the firsts to be animated!

Here's a poster I did for the Autumn Society's upcoming 80s Pop Show! at Brave New Worlds Comics, premiering Friday June 5th at 6pm. So feel free to print it, e-mail it or post it elsewhere. I really enjoyed working on this poster. Great childhood memories flashed through my head as I listened to A Flock of Seagulls. Anyway, bring everyone you know to this show! It's going to be awesome!

80s Sidekick Series

Growing up in the 80s I always found it that the side kick characters or mascots from cartoons were the hardest toys to find. Inspired by these hard to find characters, I decided to do a series of three that were my favorite! Here's my first from Masters of the Universe, Orko.

Here's the second one from The Real Ghostbusters, Slimer!

And here is the third and final one from Thundercats, Snarf!

IceCream People: King Cholado!

Inspired by Peter Wonsowski's Winton Green cone, here's my cone for Brian Butler's Ice Cream People project, King Cholado of Chalamello land! See more of these at the link below!

Published: The War Resisters League

This is a quick set up of the publication, of an illustration, for an article I did for the winter 2009 / vol. 26 of WIN magazine (The Magazine of the War Resisters League). The article talks about Capitalism's burning house and how we're getting hurt by it. I have to thank my brother Matt Cavanaugh for the heads up on this one. Also, check out the awesome cover by Daniel Fishel.

To view the full illustration go to my black & White (editorial) section below. I'm planning on retouching and editing parts of it, for a more "final" look.

Cheers!

Joker

This is my Joker for the Autumn Society Joker show in April at Brave New Worlds Comics. This was inspired by my friend IMatt's Illustration of Heath Ledger's Joker. All in all its such a great character to draw from, and I've been meaning to do one of my own for awhile.

Fairytale Background

This illustration was part of a princess / fairytale themed sticker and stamp kit for the 2009 Easter holiday season. The original drawing was done by the super talented Craig Parrillo and inked by me on Illustrator. The primary influence and style we used was of the amazing and timeless, Mary Blair!

Halloween Candy

These characters were for a Halloween puzzle gum, and other related candy products, for a candy company. The Haunted House and other background elements are by Peter Wonsowski. (Released in October 2008)

Farm Board Game Cover

These were done as concepts for a Farm Board Game. In the end the client wanted a more "realistic" look for the final, but nonetheless it was fun for me to do! A big influence here would be Joe Murray's way of creating awesome, slanted, cartoony buildings!

Published Works

These are old, but I figured I'd share them. This was when I was doing editorial illustrations for Political Affairs magazine, under the art direction of my compadre, Sam Heimer, in the summer of 2007. Cheers!

Dino Book

These rough dinosaur designs were created for a series of dinosaur books that never went into final production. The only final that ever got fully illustrated, was the Triceratops page with no text. This was my first assignment working as a full time Illustrator at a design company right after college.

MUMBLES

These are comps, color studies, and a final I did for a talking toy called "Mumbles" for a toy company in the summer of 2007.

My Retro Red VS. the Black Hole

This is another quick experiment I did just for fun. I recently got a new bike, a Retro Red Schwinn Windwood to be exact. Since this is technically my first bike ever, I figured why not take a pic or two to capture the moment...Then I opened it in photshop and that's when the fun began. Some erasing, layering, watercolor splatter, listening to Probot, and here it is.

16 Candles Anyone?

This is a recent piece I got commissioned to do for a client's wife's birthday. The client wanted a scene from the movie Sixteen Candles to be represented, so here it is. It was pretty fun!

Coffee Series

In collaboration with my brother Guayapisco, here's our coffee series.

Yes, have some.

BLAST FROM THE PAST!

I was going through some old files today and found this one and laughed. This was for a digital manipulation project for my Photography class back in 2005 at Uarts. I think I might of posted this before awhile back, but nonetheless here it is again. Cheers!

PROCESS: V-DAY CARD

Hey everyone!
As some of you know, I do commercial Illustration for different companies from time to time. For the most part this type of Illustration has a super tight deadline (like 6-8 hours) to complete. So I thought I'd share the process for a promotional card I did for a design company, for Valentine's Day. This took me about 8 hours total with sketches, revisions, and prints. Enjoy!

Cartoon Network Internship - Circa 2006 (C3K)

For those interested, I've been uploading my video projects that I did while I was in school for my film minor and sequential art classes on Youtube.

Among them is my short Documentary / Music Video during my internship at Cartoon Network Studios for Class of 3000. Enjoy!

P.S. "lil Joe" is the nickname I got at Cartoon Network, since there was already another Joe on the show, and I was the youngest of the bunch.

*To Mars*

A month or two ago I did a quick Illustration inspired by my feelings, or opinion I should say, about human kind's exploration of Mars. A lot of it came from reading many books by Robert Zubrin, specifically, The Case for Mars, which contains a beautiful quote by Italian Philosopher Giordano Bruno. And so inspired by these great ideas and dreams of someday terraforming Mars and making it our second home, I made a short video, using my Illustration and the beautiful track, "108 the boat", by the amazing Ambassador Etc. Our Space program has been on hold for almost 30 years. Our last steps on the moon were in 1972. As a generation I feel, we should aim for more and achieve almost anything as many aspired to do much strongly decades ago. Anyways I just wanted to share this with you, for I feel it is important for us, our future, and our survival. With our art and visions we could inspire ourselves & other future generations to go beyond anything we could imagine.

*Children of the Watchmen*

This here is a pin up of Sally Jupiter (a.k.a the first Silk Spectre from the Minutemen era) from the amazing comic book, Watchmen, by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. My piece will be part of a book and gallery being put together by the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society, called "Children of the Watchmen". The book and gallery will be taking place sometime in late september, early October. Hope you like!
